Matthew Smith has squeezed a lot into
his business career, including being named, ‘Entrepreneur
of the Year’ and launching a company that was identified
as ‘one to watch’ by Growing Business Magazine – but
now the self-confessed workaholic is taking on a new
challenge.
Matthew took inspiration from his architect father and set up Dilectus
from the spare room of his parent’s house in 2004. Just three
years on, Matthew’s Rotherham based recruitment company is
a seven strong team specialising in the quantity surveying sector.
As if all this wasn’t enough, Matthew is now a strong supporter
of Rotherham Ready’s, ‘Make £5 Blossom’ scheme,
investing his time and money in the borough’s young people.
This unique idea involves local businesses loaning a lump sum of £150
to a class of eager pupils. After training, each child is given
an initial £5 investment with which to launch a business
and turn a profit.
Matthew will be working with St. Mary’s Catholic Primary
in Rotherham and speaking at the Warwick Awards Celebration 2007,
he said:
“Often the biggest obstacle standing in the way of budding
entrepreneurs is not having the confidence, the determination and
the tenacity required to fully realise their ambitions.”
“That’s why the “Make £5 Blossom” is such a great
initiative - it goes beyond simply providing young people with the skills, knowledge
and understanding required to succeed in the working world and gives them a unique
opportunity to actually put this knowledge into practice.”
“I strongly believe that businesses of all sizes have a role, and indeed
a responsibility, in working with young people to help them become the invaluable
employees of tomorrow...and this will mean a more dynamic, diverse and thriving
economy in the years to come.”
