Year
6 pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School,
Herringthorpe, have been learning about what it takes
to be enterprising. The students have been involved
in a Rotherham Ready pilot project to see how young
people can recognise and record their enterprise capabilities.
They have been looking at all the
skills and qualities it takes to be successful – including
team work, creativity, initiative, leadership and planning.
And they have been using this knowledge to boost a
recent fundraising activity – by taking over
the project management of the annual class ‘Good
Shepherd’ collection.
They generated new ideas to make it more popular, planned and delivered
new activities and did plenty of problem solving along the way.
The new event was dubbed the ‘Easter Eggstravaganza’ and
pupils wrote to local businesses for donations of prizes and materials.
They made and sold cards and cakes, held a bring and buy sale,
face painting and an Easter Egg hunt and organised a hugely popular ‘throw
a sponge at a teacher’ attraction. In just one day they raised
a staggering £311.90.
Following the event children looked at 13 enterprising skills and
concepts and evaluated which they felt theyhad used during the
project. They recorded their experiences in ‘Enterprise Diary’ scrapbooks
by writing, drawing and sticking in photos.
Children recognised the importance of looking back on their experiences
and seeing what skills they needed to utilise to make their ideas
a success. The children were able to identify their strengths,
and where they could improve. They also saw that some of their
most creative thinking was prompted when they were solving problems.
