Rotherham Ready to Lead the
Country
Rotherham has proved it's ready to lead
the country and make sure the borough's young people
are ready for the future.
Recently a group of young people, teachers, business leaders and
local politicians took that message to Downing Street as part
of the enterprising initiative "Rotherham Ready".
Nearly 2,000 local young people have already got involved in the
initiative which sees those aged four to 19 benefit from a range
of business enterprise experiences.
The project will make Rotherham the first area in the country to
offer enterprise learning to all students in primary, secondary
and further education.
The visit to 11 Downing Street gave young people the chance to
talk directly to key London-based policy leaders from the DfES
and the Treasury.
During the reception eleven schools and colleges received a special
'Excellence in Enterprise Education' award from the University
of Warwick. Among those were the first primary (Rawmarsh Ashwood)
and special (Hilltop) schools in the country to achieve the award.
Dearne Valley College also became the first college to get the
award while Wales High School was the first Business and Enterprise
College in the Yorkshire and Humber region to secure the award.
Local MP and Treasury Minister John Healey MP helped organise the
visit and presented the awards. In his opening speech, he said: "Today
is about recognizing the importance of Rotherham Ready and, in
particular, about recognizing the importance of Rotherham Ready’s
achievements, especially in schools. We want to build the long-term
future of Rotherham and that means not just investing in the
current workforce but also bringing on the next generation. That’s
what Rotherham Ready is about.”
In the first year of Rotherham Ready 1,844 pupils took part in
enterprise education activities and the aim is to at least double
that activity over the coming year.
The four-year £1.4 million project funded by Yorkshire Forward
involves all Rotherham schools and colleges and aims to provide
young people with a better understanding of how businesses work
and to develop their enterprising skills.
So far, all secondary schools have an 'enterprise champion' and
they have taken part in training. That work is now being extended
into primary schools. Currently 35 primaries, 13 secondaries
and all special schools and colleges are working with the University
of Warwick on its 'Excellence in Education' award.
Rotherham Ready works in partnership with Rotherham Chamber and
other local and regional partners to involve all schools and
colleges linking with local businesses.
Other organisations involved in the scheme include Centre for Education
and Industry at the University of Warwick, the Centre for Education
and Industry, Youth Enterprise, Young Enterprise, Business & Education-SY,
the Music Factory, Sheffield Hallam University and Lifetime.
