Rotherham Ready has teamed up with Rotherham Youth Enterprise and Rotherham Renaissance to give young people across the borough the chance to put their personal mark on a historic project that will transform the town centre for generations to come.
School pupils are being invited to join a large-scale arts project, to help the Renaissance team visually highlight the improvements that town centre developments will bring to Rotherham people.
Young people will create images focussed on a series of themes, such as what jobs the developments around All Saints’ Quarter will create, how they see themselves using the public space along the riverside and how the leisure complex at St Ann’s roundabout will be enjoyed.
The results will be printed on the hoardings surrounding All Saints’ Building, paying tribute to the aspirations of Rotherham’s youth.
Renaissance Town Team chairman Cllr Roger Stone, leader of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, said:
“Massive regeneration activity is taking place right across the whole of Rotherham borough. That work is now being boosted by the ambitious Renaissance programme, and the town centre is undergoing a huge transformation. It is genuinely exciting stuff, and we want tomorrow’s citizens – including our young people – to be part of it.”
The project launched on January 21 2008 with an invitation to schools to get on board.
Teachers will be provided with packs containing background information on Rotherham Renaissance and current town centre developments and Art students from Rotherham colleges will collect the artwork from each school involved.
They will then form a mosaic design for each drawing.
Town Team vice-chairman Mike Smith, of Rotherham & Barnsley Chamber of Commerce, had this message for teachers: “To make this project work we need as many schools involved as possible. Renaissance is not just about now, it’s also about the future, and this is where your pupils will really benefit from the changes in their town. That’s why we want your pupils involved at this early stage.”
Rotherham Renaissance is part of Yorkshire Forward’s regional Renaissance Towns and Cities Programme.
