MP tells youngsters they mark "a first" for Britain

Thrybergh EAZ outside the House of CommonsSchool children from Rotherham visited the House of Commons this week to represent their Education Action Zone (EAZ) and celebrate it being the first in Britain to achieve an Excellence in Enterprise Education award.

Pupils from eight schools in the Thrybergh area of Rotherham attended the awards ceremony, which was hosted by enterprise education programme, Rotherham Ready.

The cluster of schools have been working together to put enterprise at the centre of their learning to raise pupils’ aspirations and provide real links between school and the world of work.

Rotherham MP, John Healey suggested the trip to London to mark the enterprising youngster’s achievement. He told youngsters,

“Your schools have done something nobody else in Britain has done before – you are a first.”

The award for Excellence in Enterprise Education was designed by Warwick Centre of Education and Industry for those schools who are interested in developing an ‘enterprise agenda’, but Thrybergh is the first region to receive the award as an EAZ.

Malcolm Hoare, Regional Director for Warwick CEI was at the House of Commons to present the youngsters with their award. He said,

“This is a real achievement. Rotherham is very important for enterprise education and you are part of that.”

Thrybergh EAZ project director, Tony Price has been at the heart of encouraging the enterprise projects going on in Thrybergh schools. He explained,

“Young people need to take risks, they need to be creative problem solvers and they need to lead – that’s what employers want. With these skills they can make a contribution to society and make a difference.”

Thrybergh Education Action Zone’s achievement is another milestone for Rotherham, which is widely acknowledged as leading the way in enterprise education.

The borough has attracted international interest for its innovation in teaching and Rotherham Ready is not only providing meaningful enterprise activities for school children as young as four, but is also encouraging teachers to make lasting changes by incorporating enterprise into every aspect of school life.
