Rotherham Ready is pleased to have supported the ‘Our City’ event, where children from over 13 primary schools discovered what goes into sustaining a successful town.
The two-day event was organised by Young Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber and South Yorkshire Development Manager, Janet Grant said,
“This event will help children understand how a city communicates, why businesses are important and what’s happening in their area.”
The youngsters looked at slides of Rotherham’s past, present and future before designing their own city and making ethical judgements about where to place things like factories and football stadiums.
They worked in teams to create an imaginary restaurant, designed posters to promote it and then looked into business issues like suppliers, staff costs and health and safety.
Janet said,
“Children should understand why businesses are important for Rotherham’s economy. It makes them appreciate their council and how they aim to make Rotherham a better place.”
The children also looked at how cities communicate and produced a newspaper with fictional articles for Rotherham’s community.
Ellie, a Year 4 pupil from St Mary’s School said,
“New buildings make more people want to come and live in Rotherham and make it better for us who are already here.”
Ellie’s teacher, Mrs Thomas felt ‘Our City’ was broadening the children’s learning and commented,
“This is giving them a much greater awareness of their locality, their local environment, buildings and why things develop.” |
