News: Enterprising students make great connections

Posted on: January 22nd, 2009

Enterprising students from Rotherham are making connections that count this year, with the launch of Rotherham Ready’s 5th Make £5 Blossom project.

Eight primary schools have linked up with local businesses as part of the initiative that aims to give students the chance to develop their enterprise skills.

To date, more than 3,500 pupils have taken part in the project, which sees each school receive a £150 ‘loan’ from their business partner over three months.

The schools then use the money to provide each child with an investment of £5 to launch a business and turn a profit, dealing with the real-life issues of budgeting, marketing and finance along the way.

Jackie Frost, Project Manager for Rotherham Ready said:

“The schools have been paired up with businesses around the town, such as Rotherham & Barnsley Chamber of Commerce and Sigma I.T.

“They’ve now got three months to launch their own businesses and to see how they can make their £5 blossom.

“We’re really excited to see what ideas the children come up with this time. We’ve had some fantastic, creative results in the past and I’ve no doubt that this year will be just as good.”

Rotherham Ready has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2005, with secondary and primary schools around the town winning awards for their enterprise skills.

The scheme’s partnership with Warwick University has seen a total of 77 Rotherham primary schools achieve the ‘Warwick Award for Excellence in Enterprise’ and a further 13 schools awarded ‘Warwick Platinum status’ for their outstanding efforts.

However, schools who’d like a Warwick award of their own only have until March 31 to apply, due to changes in Rotherham Ready’s funding streams.

Jackie said:

“To achieve a Warwick award, the school or college has to be assessed by a team from Warwick University who look at their framework for developing enterprise and where they are now with enterprise education.

“We’re delighted that so many of our schools and colleges have received awards for their outstanding enterprise schemes , but we want to increase that number and see even more of Rotherham’s students achieve recognition for their great work .”
