News: Fantastic Enterprise across Rotherham at Global Entrepreneurship Week

Posted on: November 24th, 2014

This year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) theme was Get Connected and Rotherham Schools, Colleges and businesses certainly did that.
Rotherham Ready and Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE) were proud to be an official partner of GEW (17th-23rd November 14).
On Monday, over 1000 young people and adults attended the Local Economic Advisory Forum held at Magna. Over 66 businesses attended the event as did the Skills bus from the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, part of the University of Sheffield. This brought to life some of the incredible advanced manufacturing opportunities that young people can train for in the area.
On Wednesday, judges were really impressed by the high standard of entrants participating in the RYE biz challenge. There were some budding entrepreneurs in the competition, showing their creativity, financial capability, and business acumen. Rotherham College, who won the competition, will have their promotional T Shirt made up and sold as part of their prize. The judges really liked their idea to brand the T Shirts with up and coming bands to help the bands gain a fan base.
Other activities included schools making products for sale at Christmas fayres with parents and enterprise volunteers, the STEM challenge where schools work with a STEM mentor to plan a product or service related to STEM and, the Ambassadors Scheme, where Rotherham’s Young entrepreneurs work with young people to encourage and support their enterprise ambitions.
Overall, a busy week for Rotherham with really positive examples from age 4-30. If you would like to learn more or get involved please email kate.penney@rotherham.gov.uk or call 01709 380906 to speak to the Rotherham Ready team.
