Rotherham Ready is all about people and so the 'team' includes everyone involved; the children and young people taking part in exciting projects across Rotherham, the teachers, enterprise champions and young entrepreneurs, and of course all the key partners who work with us to make it possible.
All these people are valuable to Rotherham Ready, but who are the people at the core that bring everything together day to day?

"Rotherham Ready aims to create a culture of enterprise and initiate a step change in the delivery of enterprise education in Rotherham schools and colleges which will impact on all pupils from 4-19. My role as Rotherham Ready Manager is to develop the enterprise education strategy across schools, colleges and key delivery partners. I enjoy working with schools and colleges who often find out that they are already doing much to foster the enterprising capabilities of young people. Our delivery partners then bring additional skills and expertise which helps this practice to become wide reaching and sustainable. I am employed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Children and Young People's Service, and am based at The International Centre and firmly believe that through high quality business/education links young people can gain the enterprising and entrepreneurial skills that they will need to shape their own future and the future of Rotherham. Catherine works with teachers to identify, support and capture the delivery of enterprising activities. Raising awareness of the enterprise capabilities in schools, developing opportunities for students to practice these skills.
"It's a great privilege to get an overview of all the creative teaching and learning happening in Rotherham today. Enterprise education provides opportunities for all children to shine, to discover new skills and recognise their strengths and weaknesses. Children love it when they are given responsibility for projects. They generate inspired ideas, take bold risks and make their own decisions - all the skills they will need to be successful in today's fast changing world." |

Andrew provides the link between the scheme and the wider business community and to encourage individual businesses to play their part and encourage them to get involved.
"Too many young people are not fulfilling their potential. Government must ensure that there is proper engagement within the education system if we are to solve this problem. Locally, we must also tackle the problem of low aspiration and lack of opportunity that exists in many communities. If young people do not start this process whilst still at school there is a danger that many will become totally disengaged. The Chamber will continue to work with other agencies, in particular engaging with the Rotherham Ready project to look at new and different positive ways to approach these issues." |

The CEI team (in particular Craig and Malcolm Hoare) work in close partnership covering all aspects of the project. Craig's special role in the last six months has been visiting primary schools in order to explain the meaning of the excellence in enterprise award, to see whether they are interested in involvement and to offer advice and guidance in getting ready for it.
Craig is the "wordsmith" of the team, and has written many of the resources and case studies you can find on this site, as well a version of the CEI award for FE institutions.
"I think that this is one of the most exciting projects our department has been involved in recently. It's unique in focusing on all the educational organisations in the borough: primary, secondary, special and post-16. Other parts of the country now seemed to be learning from this as well. It's particularly pleasant that our involvement runs over several years so, for a change, there's plenty of time to see new developments occurring. I am especially taken with the enthusiasm of all concerned . Practically all schools and colleges have immediately seen the value of an enterprising approach in a more creative curriculum which is student centred and activity based. I must say that initially we were unsure what the reaction of primary schools would be to this whole concept of enterprise education. After all, until this Rotherham development, such schools have not been part of any national initiative or additional funding linked to enterprise education. But we have been amazed! The primary schools have taken to the initiative like ducks to water; and we are constantly surprised by the different creative aspects of enterprise we are finding in the primary sector.
We have always advised governments that schools are enterprising places. Rotherham is amply proving the point!" |
