Posted on: August 19th, 2008

Rotherham teachers showed they were in a class of their own after scooping all the prizes for enterprise teaching at a prestigious awards ceremony

Rotherham is acknowledged nationally and internationally as a centre for excellence in enterprise teaching and learning, developed through the enterprise education initiative Rotherham Ready.

Now Rotherham teachers proved that nobody does it better – by scooping the only two prizes in the enterprise teaching award category at the regional finals of the National Teaching Awards.

Paula Harmer, Head Teacher at Thorpe Hesley Juniors won the ‘Teaching Award for Enterprise’ and Tina Otter, a Year Two Teacher from Maltby Crags Infants, won highly commended in the same category.

Collecting her award Paula said it represented a team effort and thanked her colleagues, pupils and her family, adding: “I would like to thank another team, Rotherham Ready – who have showed me that everything I believe to be right in teaching, is the right thing to do.”

Rotherham Ready Project Officer Catherine Brentnall said:

“Rotherham should be proud to have such talented and passionate teachers working to equip young people with the skills they will need to succeed in the future. The fact that Rotherham teachers took both awards in this category is a testament to the outstanding and innovative enterprise practice being delivered in the borough.”

Two other teachers’ scooped awards at the same evening – Alex Wirth from Thorpe Hesley Juniors won a distinction in the Newly Qualified Teacher of the Year and Alison Purhouse won Highly Commended in the same category.
