News: Impressive results at the Rotherham Ready STEM Challenge

Posted on: July 9th, 2014

Well done to Treeton CofE Primary, St Ann’s Junior and Infant School, Herringthorpe Junior School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School for being so impressive at the recent Rotherham Ready STEM challenge, supported by Santander and hosted by Rotherham College of Art and Technology (RCAT). The schools had to impress the judges with their enterprise skills by designing a product to celebrate the Tour De France coming to Yorkshire. Not only that, but they partnered up with a business mentor from a Rotherham business that is involved in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). This year, Rotherham Ready were pleased to partner the schools with Parkgate Shopping, Airmaster, Isopharm and The Whistle Stop Sweet Shop.
The businesses and schools had some really innovative ideas from bike horns to reflective cycling accessories. The judging panel of Ready Unlimited, Santander and Rotherham College of Art and Technology found it very difficult to make a decision as all schools presented themselves so well but it was St Ann’s Junior and Infant School and Parkgate Shopping that won both the Judge’s prize and the People’s Choice. Following market research at Parkgate they decided to go for a yellow photo frame in the shape of Yorkshire so that photos of the event could be remembered.
The children and businesses were also given a tour of some of the STEM facilities at RCAT and could see how they could study from level one to degree level in their excellent engineering facilities. It looks as though we have some STEM enthusiasts in Rotherham schools and colleges. Rotherham Ready will be coordinating another STEM challenge in the next academic year-if you are interested, please contact kate.penney@rotherham.gov.uk to hear more.
